GALLERIA
5247 North Clark Street, Chicago, IL

CHALLENGE:
The developer wanted to provide nascent retailers and
artists with a simple means to incubate their businesses. The new
facility needed to reference Wikstrom’s, the historic Andersonville
Swedish delicatessen which previously inhabited the building. The
Galleria needed to be beautiful, unique, flexible, and economical for
the micro-retailers.
SOLUTION:
We gutted the interior, leaving
exposed brick and ceiling joists. The front part of the building has
modern light pre-finished bamboo flooring; the rear of the facility, a
later addition to the building, has a painted concrete floor. We
developed a modular partitioning system that allows for flexible tenant
spaces. The partitions are not full height to give the facility an
open, lofty ambiance, with exposed spiral ductwork. Wikstrom’s is
highlighted by the new point of sale, built from Ingvar Wikstrom’s
original refrigeration hardware.
