CHALLENGE:
Jill and Shane Kissack, Paul Hasenwinkel, and Johnnie
Grozenski wanted to open a two-story wine bar that would relate to and
enhance the successful In Fine Spirits Wine Shop (another Berman
Architecture project built in 2004 and located just south of the wine
bar). The new wine bar needed to provide opportunity for wine education
and private events, be unpretentious, and maintain the historic
integrity of the existing building.
SOLUTION:
The wine bar enhances and expands the
unique aesthetic of the wine shop. The new enterprise is housed in a
lovely turn of the century vintage building, previously occupied for
more than thirty years by the Uptown Animal Hospital,
In 1906, a restaurant called the Capital Cafe was the original venue.
We exposed its arts and crafts period tin ceilings and significant
common brick walls; we also exposed, and restored the unusual
American-Olean pinwheel-motif mosaic floor tiles. The first floor
banquette and most of the seating is raised to bar height so that staff
speak directly to the patrons at eye level. The three-pane logo for the
wine bar is similar to the wine shop logo and is integrated into the
storefront.
The second floor is wide open, providing space for bar overflow from
the first floor, The hutchwork in the second floor is restored, and
original tin ceiling tiles are integrated into the front of the second
floor bar. Wide open spaces allow for wine education sessions or
private events.
