BURR
RIDGE HOUSE ADDITION
Interior
Designer: Nancy Wolfe
CHALLENGE:
For
a couple of happy, albeit cramped, homeowners in Burr Ridge, newborn
twins yielded a need for more bedrooms and more living space. The
existing kitchen, dining room and family room were compartmentalized
and confined, and the older children’s bedrooms were too small to
accommodate a growing family with growing kids—but Burr Ridge zoning
limited the amount of buildable area.
SOLUTION:
If
you can’t build out, build up! With cathedral ceilings and mezzanine
lofts, accessible by ship’s ladders above the bedroom closets, a
two-storey addition added 1200 square feet to the house. And, by
relocating the laundry room to a newly-fashioned nook closer to the
children’s bedrooms, the rooms not only feel larger but have more
function, usable space and versatility. Downstairs, the walls between
the family room, kitchen and new dining room were removed, turning the
previously confined quarters into an open, free-flowing great room.
